Holiday Drone Show Recreates ‘The Nutcracker’ and Sets Two New Guinness World Records

The holiday season can inspire creatives to go all out, and sometimes that can lead to breaking records. Sky Elements, a Texas-based drone show company celebrated Christmas by achieving two Guinness World Records with their festive display over North Richland Hills, in the greater Dallas area. The show featured 1,499 drones for a retelling of The Nutcracker.

The company was aiming for two Guinness World Records, which they bagged successfully. The first was “Largest Fictional Character made with multi-rotors or drones,” which they got for their towering 700-foot nutcracker. The second was “Largest Aerial Image made with multi-rotors or drones” which came in the form of a massive Christmas tree surrounded by gifts that lit up the Texas night sky. These are the company's fourth and fifth records, as they had also gotten a distinction for their Fourth of July show in 2023.

Taking place at Birdville FAAC football stadium, the drone show followed a drive-in movie format. People gathered in their cars and tuned in to a radio station to follow the music and the story as the drones depicted key scenes from the tale. The audience got to see little Clara getting the nutcracker as a present, the clash between the nutcracker and the mouse king, as well as the dreamy “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy.”

Leaning in even further into the holiday spirit, the Christmas drone show benefitted North Richland Hills’ Toy Drive for the Community Enrichment Center. You can watch the light show in the video below, and stay up to date with Sky Elements by following them on Instagram.

Winston Churchill is best remembered for leading the UK through World War II. Perhaps a lesser-known part of his legacy that predates WWII is his trip to the U.S. during the Prohibition era. In December 1931, Churchill was in his “Wilderness Years,” holding to his parliament seat but out of office. After taking heavy losses during the Great Depression, he set out on a lecture tour around the U.S. During his time in New York, he planned to visit businessman Bernard Baruch, a friend who had served as political consultant during the first World War. Running late, Churchill took a cab. As he was crossing Fifth Avenue, he was hit by a car—resulting in a head wound, a broken nose, two cracked ribs, and bruises all over his body.

After a period of hospitalization and recovery in New York, Churchill and his family left for the Bahamas for some rest. With the burden of his financial worries, he managed to reschedule many of his speaking engagements. Still dealing with the pain from the accident, Otto Pickhardt, the admitting physician at Lenox Hill Hospital, where he was treated, came to his aid with a singular prescription for alcohol.

“This is to certify that the post-accident convalescence of the Hon. Winston S. Churchill necessitates the use of alcoholic spirits especially at meal times,” wrote Pickhardt. “The quantity is naturally indefinite but the minimum requirements would be 250 cubic centimeters.” A note in pencil reads: “Keep on hand,” likely to get around the restrictions promptly.

This particular prescription has made it into history books, but alcohol prescriptions were not rare during Prohibition. It was common for doctors to recommend alcohol before and during this era, and alcohol was readily available at drugstores. Physicians wrote an estimated 11 million prescriptions a year throughout the 1920s, and many bootleggers even bought prescription forms from doctors.

Prohibition was lifted in 1933 with the ratification of the 21st Amendment. This made it the only time in American history in which a constitutional amendment was passed for the purpose of repealing another. As for Churchill, he was quick to notice the menace of Hitler's regime, and became Prime Minister in 1940—becoming a key player in the allies' victory in World War II.

A trip to New York made Winston Churchill part of the history of the Prohibition era.

Whether it is used or new, there's a lot to keep in mind when buying a car. The model, year, and mileage and are all important factor to consider. While color may be a superficial aspect compared to the functionality, the shade of the car is often the first thing others will notice about your vehicle—just ask anyone hailing an Uber of Lyft. Visual Capitalist created a graphic based on automotive research tool I See Cars‘ report about the most popular car colors in the U.S. in 2023, and the results go further than a simple color choice.

Leading the pack is white at 26%. According to some users, this color is favored for keeping vehicles cooler in sunny areas, as well as needing lower maintenance when it comes to minor scratches—making them ideal for fleets. Next in the lineup is black at 22%, and close behind are two similar shades, gray and the lighter shade of silver, at 19% and 12% respectively. The first vibrant color on the list is blue at 10%, followed by red at 8%.

However, while white, black, and gray shades are often preferred for practical reasons, another factor for their popularity is availability. Most car dealers only have neutral colors on hand, and requesting something different can mean a backorder, with the buyer not receiving their car for months. Many times, this results in shoppers picking whatever is readily available. The current choice of colors also speaks to the evolution of car trends. Shades like beige and gold were very popular in the late 90s and early 2000s, while they barely make up 0.6% of the car sales these days.

Altogether, neutral shades make up nearly 80% of cars on the roads today. Only time will tell if bright hues will reign at some point of the future. They would definitely bring a much needed pop of color to many big cities.

You can explore Visual Capitalist's Most popular car colors graph below.

For book lovers, few things can beat a quiet reading nook surrounded by nature. Paying tribute to this noble pastime, Hiroshi Nakamura and NAP Architects have designed Library in the Earth, an “underground library” at Kurkku Fields in Kisarazu City, Japan. This elegant design seamlessly blends in with the surrounding greenery, creating a relaxing yet immersive space for anyone who wants to study, get lost in a book, or craves a peaceful atmosphere.

The team's clever design makes the most out of the landscape. The library is burrowed under the sweeping grass mounds, working almost as a book-filled hideout. The radial skylight and the large windows that line the building allow natural light to flood the library—creating the perfect reading conditions. By avoiding the use beams and columns, books and their shelves provide the structure for the building, and the wooden finishes of the decoration create a warm environment to get lost in.

The Library in the Earth also functions as a restoration project from what was once a dry land covered in construction debris. “We aimed to restore the lush valley that leads to the pond that farmers called Mother Pond, and believed that the architecture should not occupy the cultivated soil layer, but rather exist humbly under the flourishing of plants and microorganisms in the soil,” the team writes in a press release. The unique design also gives them the chance to balance irrigation and water retention according to the season, which helps give the area its damp and fresh look.

In line with its organic appearance, the Library in the Earth is home to a large selection of nature-oriented titles. Among the 3,000 books on the shelves, guests can find poetry, art, philosophy, history, and science, as well as children's books. The latter are located in small rooms, the dimensions of which were determined by the hill's slant. In doing so, the designers gave young readers a cozy area suited to their size.

Tying the whole design together is the “storytelling hall,” located at the center of the building. Its shelf-lined walls and little nooks invite readers to be a part of a community moment while granting them the quiet retreat needed to fully take in a story. The designers write, “It is a library that thinks of the Earth while being embraced in the wisdom of the Earth and human beings.”

When thinking about prehistoric men and women, there are longstanding stereotypes. Men used to go out and hunt large creatures, while women gathered food—a clear-cut division of labor based on sex. However, the latest research points out that this was not entirely true. Not only did some women hunt as well, they also possessed certain physical traits that may have made them better hunters than their male counterparts.

These findings were shared by Cara Ocobock, an assistant professor in the Department of Anthropology and director of the Human Energetics Laboratory at the University of Notre Dame. As a human biologist studying physiology and prehistoric evidence, she found that many of the ideas regarding early humans–especially those pertaining to males being biologically superior—weren't looking at the big picture. “This was what everyone was used to seeing,” Ocobock said. “This was the assumption that we’ve all just had in our minds and that was carried through in our museums of natural history.”

With the help of Sarah Lacy, an anthropologist with expertise in biological archaeology at the University of Delaware, Ocobock found that not only did prehistoric women did practice hunting, but their anatomy and biology would have made better at it. But how so? Well, according to Ocobock, the female body is better suited for endurance activities due to the higher levels of two hormones, estrogen and adiponectin. By modulating glucose and fat, they enhance athletic performance—like running animals down into exhaustion before actually going in for the kill.

Additionally, the female anatomy has features that could have contributed to their hunting strength. “With the typically wider hip structure of the female, they are able to rotate their hips, lengthening their steps,” Ocobock explained. “The longer steps you can take, the ‘cheaper’ they are metabolically, and the farther you can get, faster. When you look at human physiology this way, you can think of women as the marathon runners versus men as the powerlifters.”

Lacy and Ocobock also found archaeological evidence that supports their theory. Female hunters from the Holocene period in Peru have been found buried with hunting weapons. “You don’t often get buried with something unless it was important to you or was something that you used frequently in your life,” Ocobock said.

The injuries sustained in both prehistoric female and male bodies also speak of enduring similar activities. “We have constructed Neanderthal hunting as an up-close-and-personal style of hunting, meaning that hunters would often have to get up underneath their prey in order to kill them,” Ocobock added. “As such, we find that both males and females have the same resulting injuries when we look at their fossil records.” These include head and chest injuries from being kicked by an animals, bite marks, and fractures. “We find these patterns and rates of wear and tear equally in both women and men,” she said. “So they were both participating in ambush-style hunting of large game animals.”

Ultimately, they both hope their findings challenge the notion of a “female physical inferiority” and gender biases. Ocobock concluded, “Rather than viewing it as a way of erasing or rewriting history, our studies are trying to correct the history that erased women from it.”

The latest research points out that not only did some prehistoric women hunt, breaking a longstanding stereotype, but they also possessed certain physical traits may have made them better hunters than their male counterparts.

Arguments include the presence of higher levels of estrogen and wider hip structure, as well as the finding of ancient women buried with their spears.

Ever since its inception in 19th-century China, the game of mahjong has grown in popularity around the world. While finding a game set is relatively easy, there is a unique beauty to the traditional tiles handcrafted by Chinese artisans. A now-viral video captures the intricate process of bringing each tile to life—something impressive given the level of detail each tile possesses and how small they usually are.

The clip begins with the craftsman deep cleaning the cattle bones he will later polish and transform into 144 tiles. Given the nature of the material, it's hard to believe they will look as the perfectly flat and uniform pieces we know—yet they do. The cutting and shaping is painstakingly done with analog tools, down to the rounded corners. Each of the pieces features a block of bamboo, traced and cut to perfectly fit the bone layer atop of it.

One would think that the process is about to come to an end when the artisan varnishes and carefully draws the motifs on the tiles, but he is only marking them before painstakingly carving them out. After tracing all the different suites, he gives them their signature color in shades of green, red, and blue. Once the paint has dried up, the artisan gives them a final polish to remove any excess color outside the rims and remove any other imperfections. As he goes through the tiles, he gingerly sets them down in an elegant wooden box for its future owner to enjoy.

While it's hard to pinpoint how much these artisanal mahjong sets retail for—especially considering they are likely made to order—an estimate has them at around ¥5,000 to ¥8,000 ($705 to $1130). Considering the level of craftsmanship that goes into making each tile, these artistic sets surely become treasured heirlooms.

A now-viral video captures the intricate process behind handcrafted mahjong sets—something impressive given the level of detail in each tile.

In many ways, dogs can save lives. They work in rescue teams and can detect when their owners are in distress; but sometimes, the saving is done at a more spiritual and personal level. Bailey, a pup who lives in the UK, has been credited for this by his human, Andy. As a man experiencing homelessness, Andy told Channel 4 that Bailey has given him purpose, and has even brought him back from his darkest moments.

In an interview first recorded in 2017, Andy shared his story alongside Bailey. Addressing the hardships of homelessness and overcoming addiction, he describes their relationship as “more than anything, it's company. It's having another heartbeat that's on your side.” He got Bailey when the pup was just four weeks old, revealing that he hasn't taken drugs ever since the dog came into his life.

“When you're stood there, hungry, and no one's noticing you, your mind convinces you that you're worthless, that you don't count,” Andy shared. “But with him, he looks to me for his food, he looks to me for love, he looks to me to play with him. It gives me a role. It might even be a tiny role, but it's a purpose.”

Since he is in temporary accommodation, Bailey has given him an additional reason to stay on track. “If I get arrested and go to prison, I lose my dog. They'll rehome him and that will be that. If I lose my place, I lose my dog, you know?” And while he also sees it from the personal perspective of his own wellbeing, Bailey is also “an extra incentive to do good.” He added that even walking Bailey can change his mindset when his mind slips to his addictions. The lovable pooch also allows him to meet people he wouldn't interact with otherwise.

“At the end of the day, when you shut the door and turn the light out, he's the one I reach for.” Ultimately, Bailey seems to have taught him about love. “Honestly, [dogs] can cure anything. It's all about love,” he concludes. “And through him I've learned how to give love, more importantly receive it, and he loves me unconditionally, you know? It's wonderful.”

Andy, a man experiencing homelessness, recounts how his dog Bailey has given him purpose, and has even brought him back from his darkest moments.

Even in this day and age, many LGBTQ+ people struggle with fear and anxiety when coming out to their loved ones. After all, not all spaces are equally kind to them, or they fear the way they are perceived could shift for the worse, among other reasons. That's why the reassuring words of a father have made waves online. After overhearing his son's plan to come out to him, he wrote him a heartfelt note letting him know it was all ok.

“Nate, I overheard your phone conversation with Mike last night about your plans to come out to me and the only thing I need you to plan is to bring home OJ and bread after class,” he writes, doing his best to alleviate his son's worries. “We are out, like you now.”

The unnamed father then addresses the topic head on. “I've known you were gay since you were six. I've loved you since you were born,” he writes, leaving no doubt about his unconditional love. He even chimes in to reassure him about his potential partner, adding, “P.S. Your mom and I think you and Mike make a cute couple.”

The note has been making rounds as early as 2013, when Nate submitted it to the social media channels of FCKH8, a clothing company that produces garments with progressive messages. “We hope it sets a good example for fathers to love their kids the way they were born,” the company wrote at the time. “The fact that it has been shared by so many sadly means that this kind of acceptance is both too rare and deeply craved by LGBT people so used to being rejected by families.”

While the letter is at least 10 years old now, the fact that it continues to be shared speaks of a desire to see more of this kind of good in the world. With some effort, kids in the near future will no longer be afraid to come out to their parents—and the concept of coming out will be a thing of the past.

After overhearing his son's plan to come out to him, a father wrote him a heartfelt note letting him know it was all ok. The letter has been making waves online for the last 10 years.

The United Service Postal Service (USPS) is highly reliable, and one of its most interesting policies will spare you the stress of some your packages ever being overweight. In a now-deleted tweet, attorney Paul Sherman shared that it was “physically impossible” to exceed the the 70-pound domestic weight limit of the small flat-rate box, not even if you filled it with the densest metal found on Earth.

While 70 pounds is the top weight for any mailed item before being charged for “overweight” mailing costs, it's certainly peculiar that it also applies for the small flat-rate box. It's measurements are 8.69″ x 5.44″ x 1.75″, and surprisingly not even a whole block of steel or enough liquid mercury to fill it to the brim would make it that heavy.

The metal with the best shot at it would be that osmium, a precious metal that is solid at room temperature. With a density of 22.6 grams per cubic centimeter, it is the densest naturally occurring element. And yet, it will still meet the weight limit. The volume of the box is 75.3 cubic inches, or 1,234.5 cubic centimeters, which are later multiplied by osmium's density of 22.6. This results in 27,899.7 grams, or 61.5 pounds—there's still over 8 pounds to spare.

Though it may not be a realistic shipment by any means, as osmium is a really rare metal, it is mostly used electronics, record player needles, and fountain pens. But since it's the least abundant element in Earth’s crust, with a price rivaling that of pure gold and platinum, this hypothetical 61.5 pounds shipment of osmium would be worth $350,000.

Trying to give the trusty small flat-rate box a try, creatives CW&T filled one of these packages with tungsten, resulting in a confusingly heavy shipment. “The entire package weighs 48.5 lbs. It's right at the brink of human strength. Any bigger, most people wouldn’t be able to move it,” they write. “This tungsten block was gifted to us years ago by a beloved friend who had it fabricated as part of an exhibit at Makerfaire NYC. Their idea was to allow people to experience the density of raw elements, in a way you don't encounter in everyday life.”

There is, however, one thing in theory that could be that small and heavy—a neutron star. Sherman noted, before he could be corrected by astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, that putting this kind of celestial body could make the box about 30 trillion kilograms too heavy. It is, of course, all in the realm of theory.

It is impossible to exceed the the 70-pound domestic weight limit of the USPS small flat-rate box. It can't be exceeded within the confines of the box, even if you filled it with the densest metal found on Earth.

The 90s are having a comeback at the moment, from the fashion and style to the iconic era’s music. In fact, some people are looking back to their youth for inspiration, including Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. The wrestler-turned-actor has one particular 90s picture of himself that has been widely shared in recent years. In the image, Johnson wears a simple yet somehow simultaneously flashy outfit that includes a thick silver chain and a fanny pack. For Christmas this year, the actor recreated the entire outfit—down to a wig of his 90s hairdo—and recorded a funny video he then shared on Instagram.

In the clip, Johnson walks down a hallway singing an altered version of Nat King Cole's”The Christmas Song.” “Chestnuts roasting on an open fire, ’90s Rock nipping at your nose,” the 51-year-old star sings. Casually lowering the camera to show all the details of his outfit, the actor presents how committed he is to the bit. He has it all—the turtleneck, the fanny pack, and the gold watch.

“I’m walking down the hall looking cool as f***; just take one look at my amazing clothes,” he continues to sing to the tune of the holiday song. Stopping alongside a Christmas tree, the camera pans down to catch him give a tap to his fanny pack before giving one of his signature smirks and blowing a kiss. “Merry Christmas, from your keepin’ it [100 emoji] friend. 90’s Rock,” Johnson captioned the clip.

The original image was taken sometime in the late 90s, when Johnson was first breaking out as a WWE wrestler. Ever since it resurfaced, it has become so beloved that it has amassed over 4 million likes. And while it could also have worked amazingly as a Halloween costume, the actor chose to turn this throwback into a holiday treat. After all, how many actors can say they cosplayed as themselves? To stay up to date with Johnson, you can follow him on Instagram.

Few images embody 90s fashion as well as this viral picture of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.
